Trailer using Final Cut Pro

This is my finished trailer.

This is the process i went through to create my finished tailer.

Screen shot 2013-02-06 at 11.29.54

First I checked if the material that I would use would be automatically locked together including both sounds and movie. This is to assure no gaps are left and the movie plays fluently.

Screen shot 2012-12-12 at 12.09.32

I then dragged it along to the viewer, which is placed closest to the browse window.

Screen shot 2013-02-06 at 11.32.21

I then used the mark tools to select parts of the movie I wanted to I can throw them onto the timeline.

Screen shot 2013-02-06 at 11.36.38

After selecting all the bits I needed I then arranged them in order for my trailer.

Screen shot 2013-02-06 at 11.37.49

I also edited the timings of the sounds so the music/sounds come in at the time I wanted it to as the movie is played.

Screen shot 2013-02-06 at 11.39.48

Near the start of trailer I slowed down a part of the movie so it matched the timing of the sound as the sound and video were from two different parts of the short movie.

Slowing down the movie was rather easy as all I did was double click on the cut and the attributes will automatically open up. at the top there is a tab called motion i clicked into this.

Screen shot 2013-02-06 at 12.50.12

I then went into the speed column and edited the percentage of speed of the clip from 100% to 50%.

Screen shot 2013-02-06 at 12.17.05

I also added effects into my video like ‘earthquake’ to have a great impact of action my clicking onto effect in the browse and dragging the effect onto the part of film I wanted. I then tuned the intensity of the effect. I used multiple effects in my trailer using the same technique.

Screen shot 2013-02-06 at 11.42.04

I also faded in sounds to create the effect of the sound gradually increasing and decreasing to not make it sound computerised.

Screen shot 2013-02-06 at 11.56.40

I had to again enter the effects in the browse window and go to the audio transition affect. From there I jus dragged the effect onto the part of the sound I wanted it to.

Screen shot 2013-02-06 at 11.56.31

In my trailer I have an effect of a dual shot a great effect to use when trying to get different pints of views shown at the same time.

Screen shot 2013-02-06 at 12.01.29

I did this by first creating a new layer and putting the part of the movie I wanted to be shown in the dual shot.

Screen shot 2013-02-06 at 12.04.34

I then scaled down that specific part to the size I wanted and placed it in the best position to be viewed.

From there the two parts play at the same time.

To finish of the project I then had to render the video. This is to make sure that all changes and editing are tuned in as one so it can be read without any problems or faults.

Screen shot 2013-02-06 at 12.11.23

I then saved my movie and exported it as a quicktime movie.

Screen shot 2013-02-06 at 12.58.56

I know have my finished trailer which can now be watched by the quick time player. I then uploaded it onto youtube.

Auteur

History of the theory

Andrew Sarris born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. In 1960 Sarris began to write for Film Culture where he went onto his debut review ‘The Village Voice’. 1968 he wrote ‘The American Cinema’ which will be the stepping-stone for film critics around the world. His aim was to raise awareness to the main objective of a film director. The auteur theory was criticized frequently for being to over the top but was quickly countered by Sarris “the article was written in what I thought was a modest, tentative, experimental manner, it was certainly not intended as the last word on the subject.”

What does the term ‘auteur’ mean?

Au-teur (taken from the English dictionary)

A filmmaker whose individual style and complete control over all elements of production give a film its personal and unique stamp.

In other words an auteur is a filmmaker whose films carry a specific signature consisting of techniques and styles throughout their films, which can come across as art.

Quentin Tarantino is a prime example as most films he’s directed consist of violence and humor. His work of violence scenes are normally noticed and brandished as his own. The violence used can be seen as quite disturbing and gruesome but is later masked up by some sort of humor, this can be seen in his hit movie ‘Kill Bill’ and ‘Inglorious Basterds’.  He also uses a lot of the same actors when it comes to his movies e.g. Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman. Films are assessed according to the three circles

Technical competence

-Personal style or signature

-Interior meaning

List of Auteur’s

Ingmar Bergman, Jim Jarmusch, Terrence Malick, Charles Chaplin, Woody Allen, Wes Anderson, Joel Coen, Ethan Coen, Aki Kaurismaki, Lars von Trier, Ki-duk Kim.

What I expect from an Auteur?

As explained previously an auteur can only be claimed if he/she brings a unique style that can be recognized as their work. In my opinion I would class an auteur only if their characteristics are different from others. There films must hold some sort of unique way of enticing an audience for example the theme. They must bring in a new way of film but at the same time holding onto the basics this can be through holding the same actors throughout. Most of all I think a person can only be labelled as an auteur if they set a trend where other directors will look up to.

Three circles of the Auteur on Jackie Chan.

When it comes to classing someone as an auteur I believe Jackie Chan is one of those people. Jackie Chan has not only directed 18 movies he also played the lead role in them, which has himself doing his own stunts. Here are some of the movies he directed, Chinese Zodiac, 1911, Wo Shi Shei, he Lengend Of The Drunken Master, Crime Story, Fei Ying Gai Wak, Miracles –Mr.Canton and Landy Rose, The Young Master. This alone labels himself as an auteur as he is the only cinematic star to do this. His work always consists of a cross-genre between action and comedy, whether the type of comedy is intense or not, specifically when it comes to fight scenes. In this link given underneath is one of Jackie Chan’s greatest fight scene as not only is it one of the longest fight scenes in cinema it also shows his own style and technique of auteurism.

He uses his experience he gained growing to his advantage. Although martial arts was already recognized throughout the world his humor applied to the actual martial arts creates a different type of work that only can be brandished by him. His work can be claimed as art as he uses a tradition praised by the eastern world and converts it into a masterpiece where the entire world has managed to appreciate. He also was the first Chinese director to combine another genre with action martial arts. This was a great breakthrough for Chinese film history as it expanded audiences throughout.

Jackie Chan’s movies normally stay in a linear structure as he sticks to basics. Its normally starts of with him playing the good guy bumping into some coincidental problem which he resolves by beating all of them up. It seems he likes to pay more attention to the humor and fight scenes than the actual story of his films.

As Jackie Chan uses a lot of humor in his movie it has come to mind that his facial expressions is a big thing when it comes down to it. So I think it’s only important that the techniques used converts normally from either wide shots or mid shots to zooming into a close up of the face. You’ll see this a lot of time in his films. His older films he directed, the cameras were mainly mounted and held from a distance to close up using a low amount of angles, which made it quite basic. As his fame picked up and the budget increased he explores more angles and techniques. The link below is his newest movie he directed and starred in. If you compare this link to the previous one given you’ll see a difference between the qualities of the shots.

When it comes to editing he normally likes to do his shot in one clean sweep whilst getting filmed from multiple points. This is then cut and trimmed to make out it was shot over. This technique is effective as it don’t consume a lot of time when filming if everything goes right.

For all the obvious reasons stated above I do believe Jackie Chan to be an auteur and in my opinion the greatest in all time. I grew up on his work and till this day will always stay a loyal fan. His films has created a throne for himself and will always be classed as his own independent work. I personally feel no one can create a film with both those genre’s crossed and achieve what he has today. Even if they was to succeed it will always be labelled as a shadow of his work.

Ideas Development

Now I had all my research gathered I know had to work on my ideas. So for my first step I started off with a brainstorm. For my brainstorm I separated it into 6 different types of methods for media. I then wrote down any ideas that came into my head to create more options for me to choose from when I look back.

Image - 20 Sep 2013 11.27.33

I now had to choose what 3 methods I wanted to use for my film as stated by the brief. So for my next step I had to start on the actual idea of my film and base my 3 methods chosen around them.

Proposal

Now that my proposal was complete, I could now focus on creating and developing my ideas for my film. I started drawing out story boards a swell as scripts to match them, developing my ideas for each time one was completed.

Storyboard Idea 1

Storyboard Idea 2 + Script

Storyboard Idea 2 + Script

After deciding what storyboard and script to use, I set off capturing the locations I was going to use by photography. I also made sure to capture the the photos from the angles and depth I wanted the film to be shot to make it a lot simpler when shooting.

This is my finished film.

These were the techniques i used for my final film.

In the attached portfolio, I have chosen a range of different fields of media consisting of Post Production, Theory and Creative Ideas. I’ve gained a lot of knowledge and skills over the years from actually creating and developing Ideas to actually understanding film in general. In my post production work issued at the top, shows my creativity from an early stage, as I had to edit quite a bland type of film so it can be more desirable to watch. From that project till now, my understanding of the software and techniques has greatly improved as I acknowledge the potential of what the programs are actually capable off. The theory work I attached was a project given to understand the meaning of ‘Auteur’. Although I didn’t understand and know the definition, I learned and adapted myself around not only the meaning but also the way I should further my own creative filming technique. This shows my motivation to not only learn but to put it into practice. Creating and developing films is what I want to do and where I believe my future to be. My work shows I have the dedication and characteristics that belongs in Film. The skills I have gained will defiantly give me the advantage in the early stages if I was given the chance to further my education. I still have a lot more potential and a lot more I can get out of studying in Film and hope you would consider me as a student. Feel free to look around the rest of my blog if unsatisfied with the work I have put up for this portfolio.
